SHARAPOVA, SAFINA, DAVYDENKO WITHDRAW FROM SONY ERICSSON OPEN

MIAMI, Fla. - The Sony Ericsson Open announced today that three-time Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova, World No. 2 Dinara Safina and 2008 Sony Ericsson men's champion Nikolay Davydenko have withdrawn from this year's tournament.

Sharapova, who won earlier this year in Memphis and was looking forward to playing in Miami for the first time since 2007, was forced to withdraw after an MRI revealed a bone bruise on her right elbow. She is expected to miss 3-6 weeks of competition.

Safina, a three-time Grand Slam finalist and former World No. 1, has withdrawn from the event due to a back injury. Safina had played in every Sony Ericsson Open since 2003 reaching the quarterfinals in 2008, her best finish in Miami.

Davydenko, the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open singles champion, will miss the tournament for the second consecutive year with a left wrist fracture. After an impressive championship run in 2008, he was forced to withdraw from last year's Sony Ericsson Open due to a foot infection.

The 2010 Sony Ericsson Open still boasts an unbelievable line-up of the world's best tennis players.

The women's field is highlighted by five-time champion and 2010 Australian Open Champion Serena Williams, seven-time Grand Slam Champion Venus Williams, 2009 French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2009 US Open Champion Kim Clijsters, 2008 French Open Champion Ana Ivanovic, 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Elena Dementieva and 2010 Australian Open finalist Justine Henin.

On the men's side, 16-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer, six-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, 2007 Sony Ericsson Open Champion Novak Djokovic, defending Sony Ericsson Open champion Andy Murray, 2009 US Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro and American superstar Andy Roddick will all compete for the Sony Ericsson Open title.

Tickets to the Sony Ericsson Open are on sale now and can be purchased by phone (305-442-3367) or via the internet at www.sonyericssonopen.com. An amazing two weeks of tennis conclude with the women's final on Saturday, April 3 and the men's final on Sunday, April 4.
